An Escape to Kauaʻi That's Equally Thrilling and Relaxing

There's one main road on the island, and it's a fun one to cruise in 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay's Audi e-trons.

There's something magical about Kauaʻi.

It's not the travel—New York City to Kauaʻi is no easy trip, as there's no direct flight (flying through Honolulu is your best bet). It's not the billionaires—Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have more than 1,500 acres on the island (much to the disappointment of locals). It's not the chickens, either—as the story goes, in 1982, Hurricane Iwa destroyed chicken coops and now hundreds of thousands chickens roam freely on the island.

It's that once you get to the lush island, covered in waterfalls, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean... all your woes disappear.

Where to stay
The conscious choice is 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, a sustainable wellness resort. When you arrive at the resort, located on the north shore of Kauaʻi, you feel immediately at ease. The property looks out over the vast Pacific Ocean, Hanalei Bay, and Kauais Mount Makana, and is designed to be in harmony with its surrounds—and have as small an environmental impact as possible.

The sunset views are particularly out-of-this-world. I even woke up to this double rainbow one morning during my stay there at the end of November:

What to drive
If you're staying at 1 Hotel (you should), the Audi e-tron is the official vehicle of the property. "Our guests are adventure seekers," Alexis Eaton, the Director of Marketing, Public Relations & Programming at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, tells Town & Country. "They're electing to come to Kauaʻi and stay here on the north shore, they're looking to see and do a little bit more." If you're a guest, absolutely see and do more—go for a drive in the e-tron. I had never driven a fully electric car before, and it was a smooth, easy ride. A note: Watch out for the chickens that roam the island. They're everywhere, and since these cars are so silent, they won't hear you approaching.
