PRINCEVILLE, Kauai, Hawaii – Every minute spent at the St. Regis Princeville Resort feels like an escape to paradise.
The St. Regis, tucked away on the island’s magical north shore, sparkles fresh off a $90 million revival from 2009. Every detail of the resort is exquisite.
I don’t want to leave my room – a spacious suite with multiple TVs, including one that pops up from a desk when I want to watch from the most comfy bed ever. The windows open to reveal a view of a secluded beach along Hanalei Bay and the towering green Makana Mountain covered with lush jungle vegetation. A handful of stand-up paddle boarders glide gracefully just off shore, hovering above the bluest water I’ve ever seen.
Just in case I need something – anything – a personal butler is on call. They will bring in fresh ground Kona coffee every morning and pack and unpack your bags.
The food has been great – sliders the first night at the St. Regis Bar and sushi appetizers, salad and Mahi Mahi at the Makana Terrace last night.
The highlight so far has been discovering the gorgeous new Makai Golf Club. Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s stunning renovation of the first course he ever designed now gives the resort two must-plays. (Today I’m playing the more difficult Prince course, ranked no. 22 on Golf Digest’s list of the top 100 public courses in America for 2013). Makai opened in Jan. 2010 after a $6-million renovation that upgraded everything, the views, course contours, conditioning and the bunkers. The fairways, greens and tees are covered with new seashore paspalum, a salt-water tolerant grass that remains in good condition year-round. Makai has re-emerged in Golf Digest’s top 100 for the first time in decades, ranking 80th.
On days like yesterday – basking in sunny blue skies and light trade winds that act like Mother Nature’s air conditioner – it’s a special place to play golf.
